Neuse River Flute Circle
Description
The Neuse River Flute Circle was founded in 2005 to promote the continuation of the indigenous flutes of North America * to support those who want to expand their abilities to play these instruments and to learn about the body of music associated with them * to encourage the makers and the making of American Indian style flutes * to provide a venue for sharing music and music resources with those interested in indigenous flutes * to cooperate and coordinate with individuals, associations, flute circles, and other organizations engaged in activities similar to ours * to cultivate interest in the “Native American Flute” and in American Indian flute music through educational outreach programs, performances, and scholarly research * to bring individuals together on a regular basis, and in an open and inclusive way, to celebrate and explore the richness of American Indian flute music – all are welcome.
Our Circle members are generally from the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area, though some travel some distance to attend.
More Information
Our meetings are held monthly, and Circle information is posted at our website. We have Circle members at all performance skill levels -- 20 years years of playing experience to 20 days! Meetings are informal and are held in a variety of locations. In our meetings we exchange information, give informal lessons, display our flutes, and play our flute. On occasion we have a history or culture focus at a meeting.
In November 2007 we sponsored a workshop at Meredith College with R. Carlos Nakai. Since 2005 we have performed as a Circle in a variety of places, including, Exploris, the NC Museum of History, Brooks Elementary School, Trinity Academy, churches, Duke Chapel, and the Duke Native American Student Alliance Fall Festival.
Four Native American style Wooden Flute makers are in our Circle. Several in our Circle give individual NAF lessons.
